If you want visitors at your website you have to give them what they want. Informative, useful content is what you need to bring visitors and search engines to your website.
You should write from a position of experience. If you have been an electrician for the past several years you are well qualified to write about it. Describe your work and the things you think will help your potential customers. Always write about things you know well.
The Internet is different than a book or newspaper as viewers have many choices. They are often searching for a specific thing and want to see as much about this topic as possible. It is said you have ten seconds to get their attention before they move on to the competition. Because of this humor or folksy talk should be avoided. You should also be cautious about any examples or analogies you use as this small section may be used to describe your website.
Use a word processor to obtain good spelling and grammar. Even if you are an expert, bad grammar can make you look amateurish. The first sentence of each paragraph is called the topic sentence and should summarize the paragraph contents. Frequently the last sentence will also be a summary of that paragraph. Journalists start with the main points and progress to the details. Another approach after you have chosen a specific topic is make an outline of the main points and then describe in detail each point.
Choose one narrow topic and cover it well for each page. Broad topics cannot be covered well on any one page. It is much better to choose a small area and cover it in detail on each page. It is extremely important that the title of your page be descriptive of it contents or main point. This is also best to get high search engine listings, since these are driven by key phrases users type at the search engine page. A good topic might be a phrase people would search for such as “what is Romex”.

David speaks volumes of truth about article writing!
I have been writing content for my new web site, www.mycareervoyage.com, since March and I am very happy with the traffic I am getting. I have been quoted in two articles about churches and unemployment insurance that were published in Baptists Today, Ethics Daily and Christianity Today. This has drawn a lot of the traffic I am getting. Additionally, I post articles on social networking sites like LinkedIn which is also driving a lot of traffic to my site. Another way, is to join professional associations and tell them about your site, what you are doing professionally, and write articles for their newlsetters.

I agree with the points you have made. I don't think that all articles need to be brief. I think it is more about retaining interest throughout, setting a structure, ie - Strike interest, relay problem, solve problem and create a call to action so that they click on your resource link or look into what you are about.
Geat post!
